The
Poly’s 2014 Exhibition Remembers 1914 Exhibition
Nearly
100 years ago, The Poly (The Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society) was
gearing up for its 74th
Annual Exhibition, to be held in The Public Hall Buildings, St.
Austell. On the 12th
August, 8 days after war was declared, the Trustees decided not to go
ahead with the exhibition. One hundred years on from that momentous
day, The Poly is about to hold its Annual Members’ Summer
Exhibition, featuring over 40 artists and over 200 works of art. Dot
Peryer, Exhibitions Manager said:
“Our
Annual Members’ Exhibition is a high-point in our galleries
calendar. We are really lucky in Falmouth to be surrounded by so
many wonderful artists. In 1914, leading artists such as Henry Scott
Tuke and Lamorna Birch would have been exhibiting with us and we know
that one day, some of our current crop of artists will also become
household names. Most of the work in the Exhibition is for sale, so
this is a chance for people to buy an original piece of art that they
can love and enjoy, and it might be an investment for the future.”
The
exhibition features water colours, oil paintings, pen and ink and
charcoal drawings, as well as ceramics, textiles and glass. There is
something in the exhibition to suit all tastes, whether it be
traditional, contemporary or just plain quirky.
The
Exhibition runs from 5th
– 16th
August, from 10.00 a.m. – 5.00 p.m. (excluding Sunday, 10th
August), and is held in the Main Gallery on the top floor of The
Poly.
